Farmers in Nyabihu District have been urged to use both organic and inorganic fertilizers and improved seeds in a bid to ensure good yields.
Venantia Tugireyezu, the Minister in the Office of the President, made the comments during the launch of farming Season 2015 A, on September 1, 2014.
Local leaders together with officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) joined farmers in the launch of the season held in Rambura sector of Nyabihu district where they sowed irish potatoes.
Speaking to farmers, Minister Tugireyezu called upon the local farmers to plant on time since season A gives usually abundant yields due to good rainfall. The minister also urged the farmers to exploit all arable land in a bid to increase agricultural production.
The officials also took the opportunity to urge farmers to embrace Twigire Extension Model, a new farmer-based extension approach that was introduced recently countrywide.
The season launch took place in an area where MINAGRI, through Land Husbandry, Water Harvesting and Hillside Irrigation (LWH) project, is developing radical terraces in Nyabihu district. LWH has so far developed terraces on 700 ha though the target is to reach 1000 ha in the area.
