APEFA

Action pour la Protection de l‟Environnement et la Promotion des Filières Agricoles «APEFA»

APEFA is a non-government Organization founded by people concerned with environment degradation, climate change, smart agriculture, and food security in Rwanda. APEFA was granted legal by Ministerial Order No. 99/11 of 31 July 2008 published in the Official Journal No. 38 of 22 September 2014.

Vision

The vision of APEFA is the effective integration of the Rwandan population, especially youth and women in the process of solving problems related to the environment, climate change, smart agriculture, and food security.

Mission

The mission of APEFA is to promote an environmental, Natural Resources and climate change balance at the same time including sectors forestry, Agro forestry and development of the agricultural sector for harmonization likely to improve the living conditions of the community.

Objectives

APEFA works with local communities on the grassroots

Areas of intervention

• Soil conservation and landscape restoration;

• Integrated water management

• Sustainable agriculture;

• Climate change adaptation &mitigation;

• Green mining promotion, Monitoring and traceability of minerals

The strategy is to empower and facilitate communities through associations/cooperatives, in order to reduce human pressure on forests and other natural resources through livelihood improvement activities.

1.    Promoting public awareness;

2.    Contribution to the environmental balance and food security at the community level;

3.    Conservation of Natural resources at community level (Forests, soil conservation)

4.    The development of the agricultural sector through the use of quality seed and the priority use of organic fertilizers (manure compost promotion).

APEFA extends its activities all over the country, with a special emphasis on zones with high risk of degradation (mountains, natural forests, mining sites, lakes…) to support community based conservation initiatives.

Currently, APEFA activities are based in Musanze and Rulindo Districts in Northern Province, Nyabihu and Rubavu Districts in western province; in Nyagatare in Eastern Province and in Huye District in southern province.
