Together with APEFA staff working on capacity building and community building on Green Amayaga project, the Executive Director of APEFA, Mr. Oscar Nzabonimpa visited the Amayaga region to observe the project implementation.
Green Amayaga is an ambitious project designed by UNDP in partnership with Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) with Forest Landscape Restoration mission in the Amayaga Region.
Officially launched in 2020, the Green Amayaga is a six-year initiative that seeks to promote biodiversity, foster ecosystem services, increase agricultural productivity and reduce the vulnerability of people and ecosystem to the adverse effects of climate change.
Amayaga region- covering four districts, Gisagara, Nyanza, Ruhango and Kamonyi- has seen the area lose a big part of the forest due to agriculture practiced on the slopes of hills and mountains, which has led to extensive land degradation and soil erosion landslides in the area.
With its proven reputation, experience, knowledge and skills in landscape restoration and sensitization in environment protection and agriculture sector promotion, Action pour la Protection de l’Environnement et la Promotion des Filières Agricoles (APEFA) was selected to implement “Community capacity building in the areas of livelihoods and agroforestry for Forest Landscape Restoration in the Mayaga Region Project”
It is in this context that APEFA staff headed by their Executive Director, Mr. Oscar Nzabonimpa visited sites in the four districts where the Green Amayaga project operates tracking how it’s implemented.
The visit in Nyanza, Ruhango and Kamonyi Districts respectively was preceded by the meeting on December 6th this year in Gisagara District bringing together different organs acting on the project to discuss the implementation of the project.
During the visit, the APEFA Executive Director, with APEFA technicians, assessed the activities done providing with the site managers pieces of advice that would see the project succeed.
