Back ground of the project

This project will focus its intervention on sectors around the Yanze River (Ngoma, Rusiga, Shyorongi and Mbogo in Rulindo and Jari in Nyarugenge);

The population in Yanze watershed largely dependent on agriculture and heavily on fuel wood; the local population depending on Yanze watershed is estimated at 68,119 inhabitants i.e. 16,833 households (MINALOC, 2010), the average household size being 4.7 for Rulindo District. Land use in the catchment is composed of forest plantation, open agriculture dominated by seasonal crop land, closed agriculture mainly occupied by intercropping agriculture system where few scattered banana zones are mixed with seasonal crops. Seasonal crops cover 65.4%.

The degradation of the natural environment in these areas is particularly linked with soil erosion that affects the important portion of agricultural land.

The potential sources of sediments in Yanze watershed include erosion of poorly managed steep slope soil, poor vegetated and/or disturbed areas.

Degradation of watersheds in recent decades by all these causes has brought the long-term reduction of the quantity and quality of land and water resources affecting water supply in Kigali and causing conflict related among water users in the watershed.

This project on Rational use of Yanze river water for local agriculture development in Rulindo District and for domestic use in Kigali City worth to was granted funds under FAO. The project is being implemented in Rulindo District, Ngoma Sector, Karambi and Munyarwanda cells and support more than 200 smallholder farmers grouped into one cooperative known on name of (YAHOPROC).

This project will contribute to the improvement of the community livelihood as it will create jobs, raise skills and know- how through capacity building and last because productivity from land is expected to increase which will contribute to the food security and poverty reduction.

This project will focus on Capacity building on efficiency water use, trainings on vegetable value chain; Installation of 4 rain and river water harvesting.

ponds (250m3 each) for small scale irrigation; Supply of improved seeds to farmers and River bank protection (10 Ha).

Timeline of the project This project will be implemented in 6 months of  2017.

Coverage: This project will focus its intervention on sectors around the Yanze River (Ngoma, Rusiga, Shyorongi and Mbogo in Rulindo and Jari in Nyarugenge);

Achievements/Objective What does the project intend to accomplish

Raising the public awareness for domestic and agricultural uses of Yanze water; Increasing farm productivity and rural income especially in dry season;

Developing vegetables value chain; Strengthening buffer zone protection; Generating employment along the irrigated agriculture value chain.

Main Activities

Capacity building on efficiency water use Trainings on vegetable value chain; Installation of 4 rain and river water harvesting ponds (250meach) for small scale irrigation; Supply of improved seeds to farmers River bank protection (10 Ha).

Challenges and Recommendation

There is challenge of irrigation system on hillside.

There is no enough water harvesting as well as lack of sufficient irrigation system even in water land; The use of mechanical system in irrigation is not favorable for the elderly people.

 for this cooperative to be able to maximize their production and improve their livelihoods; we recommend: To introduce solar powered irrigation system and Increase water storage systems in water land. Introduce irrigation system on hillside. To promote agroforestry including fruits trees.

Expected project outcome

The project contributes to the overall improvement of the community livelihood through the creation of employment, enhance skills and know- how through capacity building and last because productivity from land is expected to increase which will contribute to the food security and poverty reduction.
