Under the Rusizi Riverbank and Watershed Restoration (RRWR) Project, funded by TerraFund, APEFA successfully conducted a two-day capacity-building training for Community-Driven Development (CDD) groups from Mururu and Nyakarenzo sectors in Rusizi District.

Held from 18–19 March 2026, the training focused on strengthening group management, promoting savings culture, enhancing basic financial literacy, and supporting the implementation of group-specific projects.

Training Objectives:

  • Equip CDD group members with technical knowledge in tree and bamboo management, maintenance, soil conservation techniques, and effective group governance.
  • Strengthening understanding and implementation of alternative livelihood sub-projects, including savings and financial management.
  • Foster community ownership and ensure the sustainability of riverbank and watershed restoration interventions through empowerment.

Expected outcomes after the training:

  • Improved capacity of CDD groups to effectively manage and maintain their sub-projects, including tree planting initiatives and understand well the project (project name, activities, implementer, funder and stakeholders).
  • Strengthened savings practices and small-scale income-generating activities to support long-term sustainability.
  • Increased environmental awareness and enhanced resilience to climate change among group members.
  • Development of clear, practical, and actionable group plans aligned with livelihood and conservation goals.

This training marks a significant step toward the long-term success of the Rusizi Riverbank and Watershed Restoration Project. By empowering CDD group members with essential skills and knowledge, APEFA is strengthening local ownership while promoting sustainable environmental management and improved community livelihoods.
